My holistic philosophy of facilitating art entails infusing the curriculum with core academic disciplines including Math, English/Language Arts, Social Studies, Science, World Languages, and Technology. With that said, Fulton County's curriculum is standards based ( Georgia Performance Standards). The standards are rigorous and are comprised of 5 main subcatagories:
1. Meaning and Creative Thinking
2. Contextual Understanding (i.e. Art History, World History, different cultures, etc)
3. Production
4. Assessment and Reflection
5. Connections
The curriculum is outstanding. It requires rigorous study, critical and anaylitical thinking, Depth of Knowledge, deep and meaningful thinking, creative problem solving, reflecting personally and globally, and making connections. Art History, Aesthetics, and Art Criticism play an important role in Fulton County's art curriculum.
It is important to me as an art educator to inspire, motivate, and guide your child in his/her exploration of art. What is art? Why is art important?
What can art accomplish? What can art teach us about ourselves, the world, our place in the world, and ultimately the human condition? How are we all different but paradoxically the same? Why is imagination and creativity vitally important especially in the 21st century? These are big and important questions, and art is the perfect venue for debating such far reaching and complex issues.
